What affects the shelf life of yerba mate?
Yerba mate is a dry and durable product – just like coffee, tea, pasta or rice – with a long shelf life. It doesn't spoil after a few days of purchase, so you can make a stockpile of your favourite yerba mate that will last you a long time without worry. If you drink it regularly and use up a packet of dried mate quickly, you are unlikely to notice a change in its taste or aroma. The problem arises when you drink mate tea occasionally and one pack lasts for several months. If you do not protect the dried product properly, you may find that after a while it changes its qualities slightly. One factor plays the biggest role here – the tightness of the packaging. Air can enter through a leaky seal, causing the dried product to fade and lose its original flavour and aroma. Moisture can also get onto the yerba mate through open packaging, which not only changes the qualities of the dried product, but can also contribute to the formation of harmful mould. If you keep your yerba mate in a cupboard with other products – dried mate leaves can absorb their aromas, which can also affect the taste of the brew.

They store their dried yerba mate, which they consume in abundance, in kitchen cupboards, in decorative, often fancifully designed containers, in stiffened leather bags or in wooden boxes with a dispenser at the bottom.
