CBSé – against the tradition
Although not so long ago yerba mate was an exclusive secret of the Guarani Indians, surrounded by their special cult as a "gift from the gods", for some time now it has been winning the hearts of people all over the world – and not only South Americans. In the ever-growing yerba market 45 years ago, a brand emerged that shook up the world of the green, stimulating brew, breaking out of the framework of tradition and introducing a breath of freshness and a whole fever of colours. There are no boring classics in CBSé yerba mate, taste reigns supreme!
And it started so inconspicuously...
The CBSé brand started at the end of the crazy 1970s, in 1978 to be precise. Living in San Francisco (in Argentine, not USA) couple Florentino Orquera and María Amelia Elizagaray embarked on a journey of original flavours and aromas, and it all started in their... garage. They came up with the idea of combining yerba mate with mountain herbs. Four years later, the “garage” operation, which was initially housed in a 50-square-metre space, turned into an entire industrial plant of 8 hectares, located in Santa Fé. The company gradually developed its crops. The breakthrough came with the launch of flavoured products. According to the brand's owners, CBSé launched an entirely new segment on the market, yerba mate saborizada – flavoured with fruit and herbs. In 1997, consumers were able to taste innovative yerba mate from CBSé in orange, lemon, grapefruit and coffee flavours. Another milestone in the brand's history came just three years later. CBSé obtained the ISO 9001-2000 quality certification, which confirmed the high class and modernity of its products. From then on, Argentina's wildly popular yerba mate began to conquer more countries – Uruguay, Paraguay, the United States and Spain. In 2007, the company thought about the health functions of herbs and created a new series of products – functional yet tasty blends. These were compositions designed to regulate bodily functions, stimulate and support weight loss. The following years were marked by the establishment of new crops, a refreshment of the packaging design and further successful taste experiments. Today, CBSé yerba mate can be drunk "in many languages". The brand's products reach countries in South America, North America (USA, Mexico, Canada) and Central America, as well as Europe (Germany, Spain, Italy, Poland, France, Czech Republic), the Middle East (United Arab Emirates) and Australia.
With CBSé you'll never get bored!
The brand's range is really wide and several "categories" can be distinguished within it. First of all, as we mentioned at the beginning, you will not find pure, classic yerba mate without additives among the Argentine brand's products. CBSé is firmly and consistently committed to flavourful, distinctive compositions, which strongly distinguishes it from its competitors. What is worth paying attention to? The brand started with very refreshing “hierbas”, which delight many enthusiasts of the stimulating brew: mountain Serranas, coastal Hierbas del Litoral, or CBSé Hierbas Cuyanas, with a rich bouquet of additives. It is impossible not to mention the pioneering flavoured saborizadas: orange Naranja, lemon Limón, grapefruit Pomelo, the tropical CBSé Frutos Tropicales, a combination of mango, passion fruit, papaya and orange flavours, the forest fruit-flavoured CBSé Frutos del Bosque and the apple and pear flavoured CBSé Frutos del Valle. Especially the variants CBSé Frutos del Bosque and CBSé Frutos Tropicales have won the hearts of yerba mate fans all over the world! For lovers of sweet sensations, the manufacturer has prepared something special – products sweetened with natural sweeteners, such as stevia and honey. These mate teas are really sweet – try one yourself if you don't believe it! The brand's extensive range also includes functional blends – the unusual CBSé Silueta (in apple or orange version), which aids weight loss, and CBSé Regulase, which is designed to look after the digestive system. Particularly noteworthy is the latest entry in the CBSé brand's extensive portfolio – Etiqueta Negra, a cult variation of Hierbas Serranas in a premium version. An absolute hit and bestseller, as evidenced by our statistics, is CBSé Energia Guarana with the addition of guarana, which is a strong and long-lasting stimulant. It is worth mentioning here that all the brand's products are labelled "libre de gluten" on their packaging, which means they are gluten-free, and in addition, some compositions have been developed in collaboration with Dr A. Cormillot, a well-known South American nutritionist.
Yerba mate CBSé – you will love it or hate it!
Standing out so strongly from the competition and being very popular always brings a host of supporters as well as opponents. It is no different with CBSé yerba mate, about which many opinions have grown. While some love it unreservedly for its avant-garde approach, at the same time, for exactly the same reason, it is hated by supporters of tradition who believe that combining the "sacred" herb of the Guarani Indians with flavourings (even if they are natural) is pure profanity. What is our opinion? We believe that tastes vary and that everyone has the right to form their own opinion, while at the same time it is good to be open to novelties and to broaden one's horizons, without setting rigid boundaries.
What does CBSé taste like?
And what can we say to people who have not yet tried CBSé yerba mate? How does it taste? Each variation is characterised by a pleasant "lightness". As befits an Argentine mate tea, there is a subtle bitterness and astringency, which at the same time harmonises perfectly with the taste of the additives. Yerba mate by CBSé is best described in two words: perfect balance. What's more, all variants work well in any version – both hot and cold. Each product is a separate story, and CBSé is a really hot stuff in Europe. Fans particularly appreciate the composition of yerba mate with mountain herbs and CBSé Energia Guarana with the addition of a stimulating fruit from South America. Here is one of the many positive reviews: "Many companies offer herbal mate, but this one is my favourite. It is soothing and cheering up, especially enjoyable for evening relaxation. The taste is balanced and pleasant. Definitely recommended." CBSé is a good yerba mate for beginners, but also for those looking for something new, original and fresh. How much to pour of CBSé yerba mate to get the best flavour out of it? Personally, we recommend a serving of around 15-30 grams of dry product – depending on the capacity of your mate gourd.
CBSé – yerba mate that moves with the times
If we haven't yet convinced you of CBSé, you might be interested in the brand's huge commitment to current events, culture and openness to new, original ideas. This is a company that moves with the times! CBSé is active on social media, keeping in touch with its fans. Just take a look at their extensive YouTube channel, which is literally brimming with engaging content and interesting ideas. It is also worth mentioning at this point some brand-related tidbits. In 2017, a limited series of products aimed at children was added to the CBSé range, under the slogan “Mi Primer Mate” (“My first mate”). This was a tutti frutti flavoured yerba mate, in distinctive, very colourful packaging that used the motif of a character from a popular book in Argentina – Gaturro. The original and rather unusual idea was met with very great interest, also abroad. Another noteworthy event is CBSé's involvement in 2015 in the #UnEmojiParaElMate campaign, which aimed to introduce a symbol representing yerba mate among the emoticons used in social media. The company applied to the Unicode Consortium, arguing that a symbol was needed among the emoticons used every day by millions of people around the world to represent the ever-expanding community of yerba mate fans. The action was successful, and the emoticon of a mate gourd with a bombilla stuck in it 🧉 was introduced in 2019.
